A new dispensation in Liberian politics seems to be rearing its head as the National Legislature has shown a window of effort to fight graft and corruption in public office. The House of Representative has passed a resolution making asset declaration and publication mandatory.
The plenary of the House of the Representatives has unanimously voted, mandating its Chief Clerk, to collect documents related to assets declaration from all its members. The Chief Clerk will then publish the declared assets.
Plenary took the decision on Thursday, January 18, 2024, in a regular session held in the House’s chamber, authorizing the Chief Clerk to publish documents of asset declarations in the period of one month in four local dailies following the submission.
It is not known who will pay for the publication of the assets of lawmakers.
Members of that august body are now required to obtain the asset declaration document from the Chief Clerk’s Office to fill in and submit to the Clerk for publication.
Plenary’s decision is in fulfilment of part 10.1 of the Code of Conduct, which promotes transparency and accountability in Government.
