The Liberia Pharmacy Board (LPB) is warning the public against purchasing medicines from unlicensed pharmacies, unauthorized medicine vendors, and street sellers, citing serious risks to public health and safety.

The Board’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Menmon P. Z. Dunah, is also urging members of the public to report pharmacies and medicine stores that administer treatments or provide services reserved for hospitals and clinics.

Dr. Dunah said the measures are aimed at protecting public health and promoting the safe and responsible use of medicines across Liberia.

He made the statement Tuesday, September 29, 2026, during the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing in Monrovia.

The LPB chief encouraged Liberians to seek professional advice from licensed pharmacists before taking medicines and to support efforts to curb the circulation, sale, and misuse of unsafe or unauthorized pharmaceutical products.

According to Dr. Dunah, Liberia has an estimated 1,548 pharmaceutical outlets, with unregistered pharmacies and medicine stores, along with the involvement of unauthorized individuals in pharmaceutical activities, remaining among the major regulatory challenges facing the sector.

He said the Pharmacy Board is taking steps to address these challenges by decentralizing its operations and strengthening the inspection and monitoring of pharmacies and medicine stores across the country.

Dr. Dunah emphasized that pharmaceutical services are an important component of national development and play a critical role in strengthening Liberia’s healthcare delivery system.

However, he acknowledged that the Board continues to face significant operational and institutional challenges requiring increased government support.

Among the measures he highlighted is the need for increased budgetary allocations to establish and strengthen regional offices, recruit and train additional regulatory personnel, and improve the integration of pharmacists into national health programs and other relevant government institutions.

Dr. Dunah reaffirmed the Liberia Pharmacy Board’s commitment to promoting safe pharmaceutical practices and protecting the health and well-being of the Liberian people.

The Liberia Pharmacy Board was established through a 1967 Legislative Act, while its mandate was approved in 1976 to regulate, direct, and coordinate the practice of pharmacy and pharmaceutical services in Liberia.
