The 13th Judicial Circuit Court in Margibi County has sentenced Nigerian national Tony Obi and two officers of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) to 20 years in prison each for their involvement in a major drug trafficking case.
Presiding Judge Roosevelt Z. Willie handed down the sentences on Tuesday, September 29, following a guilty verdict returned earlier this month by a 12-member jury.
The convicted individuals are Tony Obi, along with LDEA officers Lovertee L. Fallah and Joe Logan.
Court records indicate that the case involved alleged drug trafficking valued at approximately US$181,008 and LRD$63,201,600.
The sentencing followed a mandate from the Supreme Court of Liberia in the case.
Obi was reportedly among inmates who escaped from the Kakata Central Prison during a jailbreak on September 20. He was recaptured later the same day while allegedly attempting to flee.
The court ordered all three convicts to serve 20-year prison terms. Following completion of his sentence, Obi is expected to be deported to Nigeria.
