As George Manneh Weah turns 60 on October 1, 2026, Liberia and the international football community are reflecting on the remarkable journey of a man whose life has taken him from the streets of Clara Town to the summit of world football and, eventually, the presidency of Liberia.

Born on October 1, 1966, in Clara Town, Monrovia, Weah grew up in an environment where poverty and limited opportunities were part of everyday life for many families. Football, however, offered the young George an escape, a passion and ultimately a pathway to a different future.

He spent his early years playing football on dusty fields and in the narrow streets of Monrovia. His talent became increasingly difficult to ignore, eventually attracting attention beyond Liberia’s borders.

Behind the global star was a young man who, by his own account, was naturally reserved. In an interview with France Football published in 2024, Weah reflected on his childhood personality and the extraordinary journey that followed. (L’Équipe)

    From Liberia to European Football

Weah’s professional career in Liberia eventually opened the door to Europe, where his rise accelerated.

His breakthrough came at AS Monaco under legendary French coach Arsène Wenger. His combination of speed, physical strength, technical ability and finishing quickly established him as one of the most dangerous forwards in European football.

He later starred for Paris Saint-Germain before moving to AC Milan, where he reached another level of success and became one of the most celebrated African footballers of his generation.

    Then came 1995.

That year, Weah became the first African and the first non-European player to win the Ballon d’Or after the award was opened to players from around the world. He remains the only African player to have won the prestigious individual award. FIFA also records his three African Player of the Year titles, won in 1989, 1994 and 1995. (ballondor.com)

The achievement was not simply a personal triumph. It became a defining moment for African football, with Weah carrying Liberia’s name onto one of the biggest stages in the sport.

Reflecting on the achievement decades later, Weah described his rise in humble terms.

“Maybe it was my destiny, or the Good Lord,” he said in the France Football interview. (ballondor.com)

His Ballon d’Or victory also carried a wider meaning for him. Weah has said the award represented recognition for the accomplishments of African players and that he used his international profile to promote peace.

    From Football to Public Service

After retiring from professional football, Weah gradually moved into public life.

His humanitarian activities and popularity among Liberians helped shape his transition into politics. After several years of political involvement and electoral contests, he reached the highest office in the country.

In 2017, Weah was elected President of Liberia, succeeding Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. He was inaugurated in January 2018, becoming the first former professional footballer to be elected president of Liberia.

His transition from football superstar to head of state was closely watched both at home and abroad.

During his six years in office, his administration placed considerable emphasis on infrastructure, education, youth opportunities and national development. Among the policies introduced was the elimination of tuition fees for undergraduate students at public universities, including the University of Liberia. (The Executive Mansion)

Road development was also a major part of his administration’s agenda. Projects included the expansion and rehabilitation of several major road corridors, while the Japan Freeway in Montserrado was completed and dedicated in 2021. (Ministry of Public Works)

Weah frequently presented peace and stability as important accomplishments of his administration, particularly given Liberia’s history of civil conflict.

At the same time, his presidency generated debate over the pace and effectiveness of development, governance and the implementation of his administration’s broader promises. His record remains a subject of political discussion in Liberia.

The 2023 Election and Peaceful Transfer of Power

Weah sought a second term in the 2023 presidential election but lost the runoff to opposition candidate Joseph Nyuma Boakai.

Rather than challenge the outcome through prolonged political confrontation, Weah conceded the election and later handed over power in January 2024.

His concession was widely noted as an important moment in Liberia’s post-war democratic history, particularly because it allowed the country to proceed with a peaceful transfer of presidential power.

A Return to the World Stage

Even after leaving the presidency, Weah’s connection to international football remained strong.

In October 2024, he returned to the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris, where he presented the men’s award—the same trophy he had famously lifted nearly three decades earlier. (L’Équipe)

The image was symbolic: a Liberian boy who had risen from Clara Town to become the first African Ballon d’Or winner was back on the same stage, this time as a former head of state and football legend.

Sixty Years of an Extraordinary Journey

At 60, George Weah’s story remains unusual in both African football and politics.

His journey spans several worlds: the modest beginnings of Clara Town, the biggest stadiums in Europe, the Ballon d’Or stage and eventually the Executive Mansion in Monrovia.

His career demonstrates how football can become a vehicle for international recognition, while his political journey illustrates the complex transition from sporting fame to public leadership.

For Liberia, Weah remains a figure whose name is inseparably linked to one of the country’s most celebrated moments in global sports.

Six decades after his birth, the story of George Manneh Weah continues to be one of ambition, perseverance, international achievement and public service—from the streets of Clara Town to the pinnacle of world football and the highest office in Liberia.
