Residents of in and around Vonzuah in the Bendoo Road Corridor in Gawula District, Grand Cape Mount County have welcomed a major boost to local healthcare with the dedication of a 120-bed medical center constructed by sons, daughters, and grandchildren of the Marpouma Descendants Development Association (MADDA).

The facility was officially dedicated on Friday, September 11, 2026, despite heavy downpour of rain, drawing citizens, government officials, community leaders, and members of the Marpouma community.

    Hospital beds and some citizens

The project broke ground in March 2024.

Representing President Joseph Nyumah Boakai Sr., Health Minister Dr. Louise Kpoto praised MADDA for the investment, stressing that government alone cannot meet the healthcare needs of the Liberian people.

Minister Kpoto encouraged responsible private-sector investment in healthcare, while emphasizing that modern infrastructure and medical equipment must be supported by qualified healthcare professionals and adequate medicines to effectively save lives.

Additional hospital beds and other citizens

Meanwhile, Grand Cape Mount County Senator and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Dabah Mabande Varpilah, described the facility as another major achievement for the county.

Senator Varpilah said the MADDA Medical Center in Garwula is expected to help ease pressure on the Sinje, St. Timothy, and other healthcare facilities across the county.

Earlier Mr. Mohammed V. Nyie MADDA Project Director who gave the historicity of the project, said, it cost a little over one million United States Dollars and the fundraising is done through annual taxation amongst themselves.
According to him, they have the brothers and sisters in diaspora also aided the process.

Mr. Nyie acknowledged the contribution of President Joseph Nyumah Boakai, Sr., whom he said was the first to contribute 100 bags cement to get the project started.

The dedication ceremony also featured traditional entertainment and cultural presentations.
