The National Transit Authority (NTA) plans to introduce a digital payment system on its buses, replacing cash fares and physical tickets with electronic payment cards.
NTA Managing Director Edmund Forh announced the plan Thursday on OK FM, saying the system will make fare collection more efficient and convenient, particularly for students and other regular passengers.
Under the proposed system, passengers will use specially issued cards to pay fares, while students will receive dedicated cards for transportation.

Forh said the NTA will launch a public awareness campaign to explain how passengers can obtain, recharge and use the cards. Authorized agents will sell and recharge the cards and receive incentives based on transactions.
He said the initiative is part of efforts to modernize the NTA and adapt its operations to Liberia’s growing digital financial environment.
Forh also highlighted improvements at the authority since he took office in 2024, including facility renovations and the repair of more than 16 buses.
According to him, the NTA currently has more than 70 operational buses, including minibuses used to transport students to and from school.
The planned payment system would mark a shift from the NTA’s traditional cash-based fare collection to a digital model.
