As the day receded into the afternoon hours a mammoth crowd was gradually expanding in readiness to form part of an official launching program of the newly constructed sports park along the sea cost in Monrovia.
On Saturday December 23, 2023, the government of Liberia dedicated Liberia’s Unification Park located in the PHP Community behind the Barclay Training Center (BTC) at the mouth of Atlantic Ocean in Monrovia, the Liberian Capital.
After going through security checks, attendees of the launch were allowed to enter the park for viewing – an opportunity that pounded many people’s hearts thus pulling down tears, expression of indignant words, while others were reigning praises on outgoing President George Manneh Weah for such a farsighted developmental initiative.
Most of those gracing the occasion were supporters of President Weah and the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC). As they walked through the Liberia Unification Park, there were individuals who shed tears, and small groups of people held conversations on how the people of Liberia will miss President Weah.
Those overwhelmed by joy were seeing shouting and singing songs of praises on the Liberian leader.
A strong supporter of President Weah and the CDC only identified as Ophelia, upon entering the park, broke down in tears, literally wailing and screaming, as she indicated that it was a sorrow and hard to accept that some Liberians could be wicked as to voting Weah out at the expense of development for the country.
Like Ophelia, another supporter of Weah, Ma – B expressed disbelieve of Liberians’ voting decision. For Lewis Henshaw, it was a mistake to vote Weah out of power. Like Lewis, Tutu believes Liberians crucified the nation’s development objectives by a no-Weah vote.
On the side of the park were three elderly women who could not hide their feelings by raining insults on security officers who attempted preventing them from entering the park. One angrily asked, “You people knew about protecting this place before you guys voted against our black president?”
The program was attended by former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, government officials and throngs of Weah supporters who believe this project was a monumental project in the parting days of Weah from power.
