Citizens of Bowein town in Dowein District are appealing to the Government of Liberia, through the Ministries of Health and Education, to elevate the Bowein Public School to a junior high school or a Semi high school. They also want a healthcare facility in the town to cater to the locals.
In conversation with our Bomi county Correspondent on Saturday February 24, 2024, the general town chief of Bowein Township, Mr. Zinnah Cole, said since the founding of the town in the 1930s, the issues of Healthcare facility and the establishment of a Junior high school has been some of the constraints citizens of Bowein township are facing.
He explained that due to the lack of healthcare delivery facility in their area, pregnant women at times are forced to give birth along the road, while in route to the health facility in Sass Town, a 45 minutes’ walk.
According to Town chief Cole, the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf administration was able to construct an elementary school, which he said cannot cater to the educational needs of pupils in the area.
He furthered stated that the population of Bowein is growing, and that area has over eighteen towns and villages which lack healthcare facility and a Junior high school.
Mr. Cole disclosed that inhabitants in the area are engaged in Charcoal production to sustain themselves. He noted that when their children complete elementary in Bowein township they are no longer capable of sending their kids to other areas to obtain higher education.
He noted that the total inhabitant in area is approximately over 5,000 people. He believes that the government of Liberia, through the Ministry of the Ministries of Health and Education, should move quickly and intervene to give their children the hope obtain education beyond elementary.
