A physically challenged female in Gbarnga, Miss Hannah George, has complained of the difficulties she experiences to access public and private facilities in Bong County due to inaccessibility and lack of ramps to it easy for persons with disabilities to move through with wheelchair.
Hannah told our correspondent on Thursday, February 29, 2024, that several schools, public and private infrastructures in the county are not accessible for people living with disabilities.
She said people with Disabilities (PWD) find it extremely hard to navigate through these facilities because of narrow entrances and lack of ramps.
Our correspondent has established that Bong Technical College and the Gbarnga Administration Building, among others, lack ramps to facilitate the movement of people with walking difficulties or visual impairment.
She lamented that learning for her has been replete with distress and hardship because her school lacks ramps to ease her movement, and there has been no efforts made on the part of the school to alleviate her problems.
Hannah stated that her inability to move freely has constantly limited her from using the available resources and facilities in the school, including the library. This makes her learning difficult.
She has denounced the national government for failing to localize the various international protocols, especially those that make the life of people with disabilities comfortable.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) calls for equal treatment for people living with disabilities and freedom from discrimination, and social and economic rights in areas like education, healthcare, employment, and transport.
