Nimba County District #2 Representative Nyahn Flomo, Sr. says he will work hard to make sure the Act for the ownership, management, licensing, and operations of community radio stations in Liberia is passed.
Cited as the Community Radio Act 2023, the instrument is intended to promote and protect the independence of community radio stations around Country, and to ensure that community radio stations serve the interest of their local communities in areas of operations.
The Act will also ensure that community radio stations are independent, impartial, and viable in promoting democracy, peace, and cultural values, among others.
The Act desires for one percent of the annual national budget to be allotted to community radio stations across Liberia in order to meet their objectives. It is pending at the House of Representatives for passage.
Delivering a keynote address at the official celebration of World Radio Day in Tubmanburg, Bomi County, Rep Flomo said politicians are undermining the true essence of a community radio by the establishment of their own stations in the name of community radio.
Meanwhile, the House Committee Chair on Broadcasting and Information and Montserrado District #17 Representative Bernard Blue Benson has given his blessings to the Bill for the allotment of national budget for community radio stations but stressed the need for amendment to certain portions of the act.
He extended invitation to officials of the Association of Liberia Community Radio (ALICOR) to discuss the amendments he intends to make to the Act before it is passed.
