The Government of Liberia is set to begin installing smart electricity meters as part of efforts to modernize the country’s power distribution and billing system.

Speaking Thursday at the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing in Monrovia, Deputy Minister for Press and Public Affairs Daniel Sando said the initiative will replace the existing manual billing system with technology capable of remotely measuring customers’ actual electricity consumption.

Deputy Minister Sando said the smart meters will also facilitate prepaid electricity services while helping authorities monitor and reduce technical and commercial losses within the electricity sector.

He disclosed that the installation will begin in Paynesville on October 7, 2026, with customers expected to purchase electricity through digital payment platforms under the new system.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister Sando announced that the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) completed Liberia’s fourth review under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) and the first review under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF) on September 28.

The reviews unlocked approximately US$26.2 million under the ECF and US$24 million under the RSF, bringing the total immediate disbursement to about US$50.2 million.

The IMF projects Liberia’s economy to grow by 5.5 percent in 2026, with mining, construction and manufacturing identified as major drivers of growth.

The Fund has also outlined several priorities for Liberia, including the planned introduction of Value Added Tax (VAT) in 2027, transparent management of mining revenues, banking sector reforms, governance improvements, and measures to strengthen the country’s resilience to climate-related challenges.
