The administration of the soccer legend-turned-President of Liberia, George M. Weah, continues to impacted by political and civil society bombardments accusing the administration of nearly everything, including crimes against humanity.
In his latest letter to the International Criminal Court, the Executive Director of the International Justice Group (IGJ) told the ICC that there is widespread and systematical crimes against humanity and violence meted against the civilian population since the incumbency of President Weah in January of 2018.
JEROME VERDIER’S LETTER TO ICC
The IGJ accused Mr. Weah of “spinning the wheels of criminal violence…” Mr. Verdier, on behalf of his group, complained that President Weah is “conspicuously silent on the widespread and recurrent incidences of violence against women, young girls and children.”
Mr. Verdier is particularly accusing Monrovia City Mayor Jefferson Koije of perpetrating violence against the civilian population, saying, “Mr. President Weah has empowered his City Mayor as the perpetrator-in-chief.” He said Mayor Koijee behaves like a violent psychopath who acts under the authority of President Weah alone and is shielded and protected by him.
In brief chat with Mr. Koije Saturday, February 22, 2020, he rubbished claims by Mr. Verdier, former Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). “I don’t know what is talking about. He lied about me. Maybe something is happening to Verdier,” Koije said.
Speaking from Spain via phone, Koije said the IGJ does not have evidence to prove its allegations against him. Mr. Koije has repeated denied all the allegations against him and challenged his accusers to provide proof of his involvement in any war activities or violence acts.
