Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., traveled to Ghana unannounced on Tuesday, but quickly returned to the country without meeting his Ghanaian counterpart, President Nana Akufo-Addo.
An Executive Mansion press release Tuesday, February 13, 2024, after President Boakai left the country unannounced, said that President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., had left the country for a two-day work visit to Ghana. The release further said, “While in Ghana, the President will meet and hold consultations with his Brother and Friend, Ghanaian Leader, H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo, on matters of mutual interest to both countries and issues obtaining in the sub-region.”
But President Boakai did not meet with President Akufo-Addo because the Ghanaian President and delegation had left his country the same Tuesday and had traveled Munich, Germany to attend a Security Conference.
So instead of meeting “his brother and friend” as the Executive Mansion release noted, President Boakai returned home “following a brief successful working visit to the Republic of Ghana.”
Even more bizarre is that the Executive Mansion said President Boakai met “with his Ghanaian counterparts…” The release did not say how many counterparts President Bokai met but it did indicate the Liberian President met with the Vice President of Ghana, Mahamudu Bawumia.
“Ghana and Liberia share a unique history of being strong proponents of stable democratic governance not only in West Africa but on the African continent by the peaceful conduct of elections and transitions from one democratically elected president to another in recent history,” the release signed by Kula Fofana, said.
