President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has extended heartfelt congratulations to the Government and people of the Republic of Italy on the occasion marking its 71st National and Republic Day, says a press release issued by the Foreign Ministry of Liberia.

The Italian National and Republic Day is the Italian national holiday that celebrates the day when it became republic on June 2nd, 1946. In Italy it commemorates the referendum of 1946, when Italians were asked to decide what form of government, either a monarchy or republic, to give to the country. It was the first constitutional referendum after World War II and the fall of Fascism.

Until 1946 Italy was a kingdom ruled by the House of Savoy. On June 2nd, 1946 Italy became a Republic after 85 years of monarchy. Thus, the monarchs of the House of Savoy were deposed and exiled.

According to the release, in her message to President Sergio Mattarella of Italy, President Sirleaf said, “We note with respect the cordial relationship our both countries continue to enjoy spanning about 155 years since, when your country and its people gave recognition to Liberia’s nationhood.”

She said that in these years, relations between both countries have made significant gains across many spheres, including the private sector, development assistance and political engagements.

Mdam Sirleaf highlighted the positive impact of the A.M. Dogliotti School of Medicine that which was inspired by the excellent relations between the two nations that continues to contribute to Liberia’s health system.

“Beyond these efforts, she stressed, “our cooperation in education and agriculture has been very successful, and I wish to suggest reactivation in these areas to build upon earlier gains made.”

Sirleaf recalled Liberia’s participation in the First Italy-Africa Ministerial Conference. “Last year in May, our deputy foreign ministers had the opportunity to meet on the side-lines of the First Italy-Africa Ministerial Conference where frank and fruitful discussions were held to give impetus to our ongoing partnership.”

She expressed the hope that relations will be further enhanced for the mutual interest of both countries and peoples.

The Liberian President wished for colleague, President Mattarella, good health, and for the Government and people of Italy, peace, happiness and success in their undertakings.
