The Liberia National Commission on Arms (LiNCA) is urging individuals in possession of unregistered firearms to come forward and have their weapons registered in accordance with Liberia’s arms-control laws.
Speaking Thursday at the Charles Gbenyon Press Hall in Monrovia, LiNCA Vice Chairman, Cllr. Vahkpanah Wymon, said the Commission is providing firearm holders an opportunity to regularize their possession through the proper registration process.
However, he warned that the opportunity would not remain open indefinitely.
Cllr. Wymon stressed that registering firearms is important to improving accountability and helping national security and public safety institutions maintain accurate records of weapons in circulation across the country.
He appealed to individuals who are currently in possession of firearms but have not declared them to take advantage of the ongoing registration process, cautioning them against allowing fear or misinformation to prevent them from complying with the law.
According to him, firearm holders are encouraged to visit the Commission’s headquarters, where they can engage with LiNCA specialists and officers to obtain information about the registration requirements and ensure that their weapons are properly documented.
The LiNCA Vice Chairman said the Commission remains hopeful that firearm holders will respond positively to the appeal and voluntarily comply with Liberia’s arms-control regulations.
He also disclosed that the Commission’s Intelligence Bureau continues to conduct daily operations aimed at identifying firearms and monitoring compliance with the country’s arms-control laws.
Cllr. Wymon cautioned firearm holders against assuming that they can permanently evade the registration process, urging them instead to come forward voluntarily and regularize their possession through lawful and peaceful means.
