No sooner than Nathaniel McGill, Senator of Margibi County, was elected to the chairmanship of the Senate committee on education when educators began a campaign to have him removed from the senate committee.
In strongly worded letter Senate Pro-Tempore, Grand Bassa Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, the Professional Educators Association of Liberia (PEAL), the National Teachers Association of Liberia (NTAL), the National Association of Liberia School Principals (MALSP), the National Parents Teachers Association of Liberia (NPTAL), the National Association of Private School Owners of Liberia, and the Concerned Education Workers of Liberia, said the election of Mr. McGill as head of the Senate Education committee is troubling.
EDUCATORS’ LETTER AGAINST MCGILL
“Mr. McGill is an individual who has been sanctioned by the United States of America,” the group noted, saying that heading the committee raises serious doubts about the future of the education sector in Liberia. They claimed that McGill’s presence on the committee “failed to inspire confidence among those who are tirelessly working towards” education improvement in Liberia.
The letter said, “As representatives of educators, principals, parents, teachers, and workers, we firmly believe that this appointment undermines the principles of accountability and integrity.” They say Sen. McGill “lacks the moral standing required to effectively lead the committee responsible for shaping the educational landscape of Liberia.
The educators are asking the Senate to reconsider “this appointment and instead select a qualified candidate who possesses the necessary expertise, commitment, and integrity to safeguard the future of education in Liberia.”
