By Jefferson Tamba Koijee, Former Lord Mayor of Monrovia, Liberia
Right before the eyes of Mr. Boakai, we have all witnessed how the nation’s Internal Affairs Minister, Francis S. Nyumalin Sr., shamelessly used his proximity to the presidency and the power of his office to abuse a poor Liberian woman seeking a job. Since November 2024, the so-called “rescue mission” has turned a blind eye and failed to respond to this troubling scandal.
Why then is Mr. Boakai still silent? Is it because Minister Nyumalin claimed he made a blood sacrifice that led to Boakai’s 2023 election victory? Or is it because Nyumalin also boasted of being the custodian of Boakai’s darkest secrets? A woman was raped, she bled, and she cried out for justice yet the Ministry of Gender under Minister Horace Gbeme-Kollie, and Police Inspector General Coleman, never intervened. Where was the President’s Security Advisor, Samuel Kofi Woods, once hailed as a human rights defender, when mysterious killings and police brutality against the people especially youth and students were happening?
Where was the National Civil Society Council of Liberia Chairperson, Madam Loretta Alethea Pope Kai, who was appointed by Boakai to the Board of the FDA? Where was Ne-Suah Beyan-Livingstone, appointed to the Governance Commission? Where was Eddie D. Jarwolo’s NAYMOTE, enjoying a salary on the Youth Advisory Council? Where was Rev. Dr. Samuel Reeves, President of the Liberia Council of Churches and now sitting on the Board of the Liberia Electricity Corporation? Where was Imam Ali Krayee, appointed to the Board of the National Port Authority?
The silence of these individuals is not accidental it was carefully arranged by Mr. Boakai to destroy the sanctity of independent advocacy in our country.
When we were in power, despite the manufactured lies thrown at us, we offered a competitive democracy. Activism was normal, and as Mayor, I personally ensured that water and food were available for peaceful protestors whenever they assembled to speak against our government. Today, Mr. Boakai doesn’t care.
Yet, I deeply appreciate some independent media voices who have refused to eat the crumbs falling from Boakai’s rotten table.
Months later, another shock has emerged: the Deputy Minister for Youth Development has allegedly raped a 14-year-old child. And in the midst of this, Senator Dillon parades on social media pretending to condemn McGill’s scandal. But where was Dillon when Nyumalin raped his survivor? Now he has the shameless audacity to parade in hypocrisy, exposing his gross insensitivity to the plight of ordinary Liberians.
Our country is at the verge of collapse because Mr. Boakai is leading us into ethnic bias and selective justice. Evidence is clear: a Kissi man from Lofa was spared prosecution, while a Bassa man is being hunted down. This tells us one thing, if McGill were from Lofa, he would have already been protected by Boakai. Even if he only spoke Kissi, justice would have been buried.
This is the Boakai we know! A President presiding over a bleeding nation. Liberia is crying out.
